Prioritize Affordable Housing in Squamish
We believe that the future of Squamish should be one where everyone—regardless of income—has access to a safe, affordable place to call home. Currently, the District of Squamish is exploring selling 17-acres of publicly owned land to private developers in order to fund necessary infrastructure upgrades and community amenities.
While we understand the need to improve our town’s infrastructure, we believe this is a critical opportunity to ensure that the long-term benefits of this land sale are shared by all residents—especially those struggling with the rising cost of housing. There is another option!
Local non-profit housing providers have applied to purchase the land at market rates to support both of these urgent community needs: the creation of affordable housing as well as money for infrastructure.
We need your support to ensure this development includes affordable housing.
We are calling on the District of Squamish to incorporate affordable housing into the sale and development of this land. Without affordable housing, we risk further excluding local families, workers, and young people from being able to live in the community they call home.
Here’s why this matters to all of us
Supporting Local Families and Workers: From teachers and healthcare workers to retail staff and service employees, many people who make Squamish a thriving community can’t afford to live here. Affordable housing would help keep our workers in town, ensuring our community remains strong and resilient.
Ensuring Economic Diversity: For Squamish to remain a vibrant, dynamic place, we need housing for people of all income levels. Affordable housing is key to ensuring that our community doesn’t become just another exclusive, expensive place to live.
Creating Long-Term Stability: The housing crisis is only growing. If we don’t act now, we’ll continue to see an exodus of locals who can no longer afford to live in Squamish. Affordable housing is an investment in our community’s future.
Making the Most of Public Assets: The sale of public land is an opportunity to ensure that the benefits are shared by all of us, not just private interest. With affordable housing in the mix, the long-term benefits of this land sale will be felt across the entire community for generations.
This is where we need you
We are asking the District of Squamish to take action by:
Designating a portion of the 17-acre land for affordable housing.
Working with non-profit housing providers and developers to create a variety of affordable housing options for low-to-middle-income residents.
Engaging residents in an open, transparent planning process.
Support non-profit housing providers to purchase a portion of our community land to build affordable housing. Help us ensure this community asset benefits the residents of Squamish.
We can’t do this alone. We need YOU to join us in ensuring the District of Squamish prioritizes affordable housing in this important development.
By signing this petition you stand for a future where all community members can continue to call Squamish home. Together, we can make sure this land sale benefits all of us.
